Band 8 model answer

The question of whether whether people should accept bad situations or try to improve them is widely debated in modern society. While stoic acceptance can be wise when events are genuinely uncontrollable, I am convinced that resignation should not be confused with maturity.

The most compelling reason is that acceptance prevents wasted energy and allows people to preserve dignity under pressure. This matters because a person facing a sudden illness may first need emotional adjustment before planning treatment or work changes. Moreover, active improvement, however, turns difficulty into a field for agency and learning. These effects can continue to influence individuals and communities beyond the immediate situation.

Admittedly, uncritical acceptance can legitimise avoidable suffering. Yet this weakness can be reduced if people distinguish between facts that cannot be changed and systems that can be challenged. Furthermore, a balanced approach would allow inner calm to support outward action.

On balance, the strongest response is realistic acceptance followed by purposeful improvement. Provided that those rules are consistently enforced, this approach offers a stronger and more sustainable answer to the issue.
