Some people think the best way to solve global environmental problems is to increase the cost of fuel. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

有人认为解决全球环境问题的最佳方式是提高燃油价格。你在多大程度上同意或反对?

Band 7 model answer

It is often argued that raising fuel prices as a solution to global environmental problems. Although fuel pricing can influence behaviour quickly, I believe that it should support, rather than replace, broader climate policy.

A major reason is that higher prices make wasteful consumption less attractive. In practical terms, airlines, delivery firms, and drivers all have stronger reasons to improve efficiency. This can lead to lower emissions in transport and industry. In addition, tax revenue can fund renewable energy or buses.

Nevertheless, the disadvantages should not be ignored. fuel is connected to food prices, heating, and basic mobility. Another concern is that without alternatives, a tax may become politically unpopular and socially unfair. These problems may reduce the value of the policy or behaviour if no safeguards are provided.

For these reasons, I would argue that fuel pricing is useful but incomplete. It should be combined with clean infrastructure and targeted support for vulnerable groups.
