Band 8 model answer

The question of whether living in a country where a foreign language is needed every day is widely debated in modern society. While linguistic insecurity can initially limit access to work, services, and friendship, I am convinced that these obstacles are manageable rather than decisive.

The most compelling reason is that immersion turns language learning from an academic exercise into a daily survival skill. This matters because routine interactions at clinics, banks, and workplaces require learners to connect vocabulary with real consequences. Moreover, cross-cultural contact can also weaken stereotypes and improve adaptability. These effects can continue to influence individuals and communities beyond the immediate situation.

Admittedly, people without support may retreat into narrow communities and remain dependent on others. Yet this weakness can be reduced if local authorities provide accessible language courses and plain-language public services. Furthermore, a balanced approach would allow newcomers to preserve cultural identity while still joining the host society.

On balance, foreign-language environments can create pressure, but they also accelerate integration. Provided that those rules are consistently enforced, this approach offers a stronger and more sustainable answer to the issue.
