Writing Task 2 prompt

Many people believe educational standards have declined in recent years. Why might this be, and how can standards be improved?

许多人认为近年来教育水平下降。原因可能是什么?如何提高?

Band 8 model answer

The question of whether the possible decline of educational standards is widely debated in modern society. While claims of decline sometimes reflect nostalgia rather than evidence, I am convinced that nevertheless, many systems struggle to protect depth in an age of distraction and inequality.

The most compelling reason is that educational quality depends less on slogans than on expert teaching and meaningful feedback. This matters because a student who revises essays through detailed comments learns more than one drilled only for exams. Moreover, curricula that value reasoning can prepare learners for unfamiliar problems. These effects can continue to influence individuals and communities beyond the immediate situation.

Admittedly, overreliance on testing may reward short-term memorisation and discourage curiosity. Yet this weakness can be reduced if assessment includes writing, projects, and oral reasoning alongside exams. Furthermore, a balanced approach would allow standards to remain rigorous without becoming mechanical.

On balance, standards improve when schools cultivate attention, feedback, and intellectual confidence. Provided that those rules are consistently enforced, this approach offers a stronger and more sustainable answer to the issue.
