The question of whether whether businesses have social responsibilities as well as profit goals is widely debated in modern society. While without profit, businesses cannot innovate, employ people, or pay taxes, I am convinced that profit is legitimate only within a framework of social responsibility.
The most compelling reason is that firms draw value from communities and therefore owe them more than legal minimalism. This matters because unsafe labour or environmental dumping turns private profit into public cost. Moreover, responsible conduct can create durable trust that short-term exploitation destroys. These effects can continue to influence individuals and communities beyond the immediate situation.
Admittedly, corporate social responsibility can become decorative if not measured or regulated. Yet this weakness can be reduced if social duties are linked to labour law, environmental standards, and public disclosure. Furthermore, a balanced approach would allow companies to compete while internalising their social impact.
On balance, businesses should pursue profit, but not at society's expense. Provided that those rules are consistently enforced, this approach offers a stronger and more sustainable answer to the issue.
