Band 7 model answer

It is often argued that taxing unhealthy food. Although there are understandable reasons why some people support it, I believe that it is useful only if the downsides are limited.

A major reason is that higher prices can discourage excess sugar and salt consumption. In practical terms, taxes may push consumers toward better choices and encourage reformulation. This can lead to better outcomes for individuals and society. In addition, it can also create broader social benefits.

Nevertheless, the disadvantages should not be ignored. taxes can be unfair to low-income households and do not guarantee behaviour change. Another concern is that it can also place new pressure on people and institutions. These problems may reduce the value of the policy or behaviour if no safeguards are provided.

For these reasons, I would argue that the best answer is a balanced one. policy should combine taxation with education and affordable healthy options.
