Writing Task 2 prompt

In many countries, children do some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as positive, while others think it is wrong. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 8 model answer

The question of whether children doing paid work is widely debated in modern society. While carefully supervised work can cultivate resilience and practical judgement, I am convinced that childhood should not be converted into an economic resource.

The most compelling reason is that limited work can connect effort with reward in a way classroom lessons cannot. This matters because a short holiday job may teach reliability without undermining education. Moreover, such experience can strengthen confidence and empathy for working adults. These effects can continue to influence individuals and communities beyond the immediate situation.

Admittedly, paid labour easily becomes exploitation when families or employers depend on it. Yet this weakness can be reduced if hours, conditions, and age limits are enforced rigorously. Furthermore, a balanced approach would allow learning through work to exist without sacrificing childhood.

On balance, paid work is positive only as education, not as necessity. Provided that those rules are consistently enforced, this approach offers a stronger and more sustainable answer to the issue.
